Living on a farm between Medicine Hat and Brooks, Ty Schneider, deputy mayor, remembers nostalgically the large Christmas Eve gatherings of his family when he was a kid.
Medicine Hat News: To start us off, how many years have you been with the city? Russ Smith: I have been with the city just over 13 years. News: Thirteen years — so that's quite a while. Where did you grow up? Smith: I grew up in Calgary.

I’ve smoked since I was 11 years old and have made numerous attempts to kick the habit. The most recent was last spring when I butted out for a couple of months, but a family emergency was my excuse for lighting up again and I have regretted the decision ever since.

Each year, children from schools around the city visit local Dairy Queen locations to place donated gifts under the Angel Tree for the Medicine Hat News Santa Claus Fund.
