Young people looking for that
all-important summer job can start their search with a Service
Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY).
Formerly known as the “Hire A
Student” program, SCCY’s aim to help young people find
employment by connecting them with employers and offering tips on
everything from resumé writing to job interviews.
The Medicine Hat SCCY opened its doors two
weeks ago for the summer season. The program operates out of the
YMCA Youth Works building at 770 1st St. SE. In addition to helping
youth find full- and part-time summer work, the centre also has a
casual labour program that links students with people who have odd
jobs that need to be done.
All interested local employers are also
asked to call in or fax their job openings to SCCY. They can also
do it online at www.jobbank.gc.ca
Tague Lamarche, lead youth services
officer at the Medicine Hat SCCY, says jobs are out there for
people willing to look for them.
“From what I’ve seen so far
this summer, there are lots of jobs available, but it depends a bit
on what you’re looking for,” he says. “For
students looking for more specialized jobs, they can be a bit
harder to find.”
Lamarche says his No. 1 tip for young
people is to think carefully about what kind of summer job they
want. “I would say first, sit down and think about what
you’re looking for in a summer job,” he says.
“Different jobs offer different skill sets that you may be
able to use in a career down the road.”
Once you’ve decided on the job you
want, Lamarche recommends coming down to the SCCY and having
someone look over your resumé.
“If you don’t get that
resumé looked after, you won’t get the
interview,” he says.
People can also register for the casual
labour program. "It's a great program for people who have one-day
jobs and for youth who need some more flexibility with their work
schedule. Some youth don't have time to get a full-time job for
the summer," said Lamarche.
