Sun Devils drop first regular season match in 32 tries

The way the Lethbridge Barracudas celebrated Thursday’s 9-7 win over the Medicine Hat Sun Devils, you could swear they won the league title.
Considering the host team hadn’t lost in 31 previous regular season contests, the result might have been even more important.
For the first time in three years, there’s a new team atop the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League’s junior tier three South Division standings.
“It feels great,”said Barracudas coach Bill Rollingson. “I can’t even describe it in words. It’s one of the greatest things I’ve had coaching in the last three years with this team.
“It shows that we’re progressing every year. We’re a force to be reckoned with this year.”
Cole McDonald had five points including the winning goal for Lethbridge, which improves to 4-0-1.
“A lot of us have played together long enough,”surmised McDonald. “We’re starting to click really good.”
Medicine Hat falls to 5-1, and coach Ed Skryp almost seemed relieved the lengthy streak was over.
“I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. I just thought, well, that’s OK. Guys get a little bit too cocky, and last year we had it pretty easy.
“This year, they see that we’re going to have to work.”
Though Medicine Hat outshot Lethbridge 40-27, five power play goals including two in the last six minutes spelled doom for the Sun Devils.
Brandon Lawes had the Devils’ first three goals to lead the team.
“It was a good game though,” noted Josh Peters, 17, who had a goal in a losing cause. “It’s nice to have some competition in this league. It’s great to see they’re picking it up too.”
