The buzz word in the home fashion
industry these days is luxury. We (the consumer) all want to
surround ourselves with lavishness, but the question is, can we
afford to do this? Absolutely, luxury is not necessarily synonymous
with big ticket items. I can be a feeling about a specific
‘thing,’ it is a convenience; luxury is small
indulgences, generosity and creating a special richness at home.
Luxury is about bringing treats into the home for you and your
rooms.
Let’s start where we spend the
most time — the bedroom. Treat yourself to special sheets.
Don’t worry about the price tag; you only need one set of
luxurious sheets. You’ll feel like the Queen every time you
slip between them and you’ll reward yourself with a better
nights sleep as well. Try a mattress topper and new high quality
pillows as well. Your bed never felt so good. Next treat
for you and your space will be a duvet cover and shams.
In the bathroom, pamper yourself
with plush towels, French-milled soaps, special bath oils and
creams in beautiful jars sitting on the counter. I buy fabulous
glass canisters, decanters and vases from discount home stores and
then I fill them with my lotions and potions. Pennies a day but
worth every one.
When we are adding luxury to our home we
don’t need to do it all at once. Small purchases managed
overtime until all of special places offer a lushness that
undeniably makes life better.
Fresh flowers are truly a luxury but
they can actually be free. You know the saying “stop and
smell the roses.” Many of us forget to do just that. Take the
time to walk in the garden or on the greenway and bring home a few
clippings of flowers or flowering branches. Even a single rose can
bring a sense of richness into a room.
In the evenings turn off the lights and
light a few scented candles. Treat yourself to candles made with
healthy cotton wicks, beeswax and pure essential oils.
Add art to your walls. Beautifully
framed art always brings a sense of fulsomeness to a space. Start
collecting original pieces from art shows, your travels or student
works. Frame some of your children’s art or even a leaf found
in the yard.
Add architectural details to a room with
crown moldings, a fireplace mantel (even if there is no firebox add
a mantel) or built in bookcases (you can simply add crown molding
to store bought book shelves to give them a built in feel) to give
a room a sense of lushness. One room at a time and this is an easy
do-it-yourself project.
Small indulgences and luxuries at home pay
off big dividends.
Spoil yourself. It is never too late or
too early to start and no one deserves it more than you do. |
