The Medicine Hat Dragon Boat Association will be hosting the second annual Dragon Boat Festival at Elkwater Lake on Aug. 23.

Individuals of any fitness level are invited to put together a team and compete in the 500-metre race.

A dragon boat team consists of 22 people in total – 20 paddlers, one steersperson and one drummer.

Any new team that registers for the festival receives two free pre-designated practice times with the possibility of booking more practices for an additional fee.

The early-bird deadline to register is July 18 and the final deadline to register is Aug. 8. A $700 registration fee will be required for teams who register on or before the early-bird deadline and any teams who register after Friday will pay a registration fee of $800.

The registration fee includes all required equipment needed to dragon boat race, including paddles.

The festival is accepting women's only racing teams and mixed racing teams. However mixed teams require at least six male paddlers and at least six female paddlers.

Dragon Boat Festival chairperson, Jan Dynes said, "It's just a great opportunity to work together as a team to move your boat 500 metres. It's a tremendous team- building experience because there are no shining stars. One person can't move that boat any faster – all 22 have to work together."

If anyone is interested in participating, contact Medicine Hat Dragon Boat Festival Registrar, Cal Niebergall at 403-526-7886 or e-mail him at: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
