A little light goes a long way Print E-mail

I know it’s only the middle of July and I’m already talking about the end of summer and the arrival of fall, how could I spoil the moment. My apologies, blame it on the Virgo in me . . . you know the one that is always planning ahead and analyzing every situation. Simply put, I don’t want to lose this feeling of light and warmth that summer brings to our homes. I have some ideas to keep our houses bright even as the days become shorter and shorter.

The way in which we accent and accessorize a space can have a profound impact on how light or dark it feels. In the kitchen set three glass jars or vases or boxes on the window ledge or behind the sink. Vary the water level for visual interest and even add a few polished stones to the bottom of the jars. Float a single flower head in each container. Refresh and change the water often to keep the containers looking their best.

On a wall that doesn’t receive a lot of light add a wall mounted picture light behind a piece of art, you’ll be amazed at how much better, even an inexpensive piece of art looks when you add direct light on it.

Have a piece of mirror cut to fit on top of a dining bureau or end table in a bedroom or living room. You’ll be amazed at how much more light will be brought into the space with the simple addition of mirror. Placing the mirror on a horizontal surface means we don’t need to worry about what is being reflected we simply want the light it will bring into the space. On top of the mirror to maximize the light capabilities add a crystal bowl and a vase of flowers or potted plant and a table lamp. For a dark dining room, I have placed mirror over top of a glass or wooden table top to bring not only light but chic and elegant style into the room. A more conservative approach would be to set the table with mirrored charger plates.

Even in small rooms, aim for at least three light sources — ideally a floor lamp or overhead light placed on a dimmer switch and matching table lamps. To banish gloomy corners try using canister styled up lights.

Adding light now to our rooms will keep that summer feeling at home well into fall. It’s always a good idea to plan ahead and besides your rooms will look fabulous.
