The Moduline Mets are in a three-way tie
for first-place at the Canadian junior Little League championship
at Port Coquitlam, B.C. heading into today&rsquos final round
robin games.
Medicine Hat (3-1) hammered the B.C.
champion Whalley Juniors 12-2 on Sunday.
"We just hit the ball plain and simple,"
said manager Kevin Friesen, whose squad jumped to a 7-0 lead thanks
largely to home runs from Chad Hodges, Tyler Mastel and Greg
Adams.
Adams also pitched the complete game,
going five-innings in the victory.
Whalley and the host Port Coquitlam
A&rsquos also sit with 3-1 records. If Medicine Hat wins today
against the Quebec champion NDG Lynx (0-4), they will finish no
lower than second after tiebreakers.
On Saturday, the Mets scored 10 runs in
their final at bat to break a 10-10 tie against the Port Arthur
Nationals and beat the Ontario champions 20-10.
Medicine Hat&rsquos Hodges and Troy
Gedney both homered. Gedney drove in a total five runs. The top two
teams after the round robin benefit from a double knockout formula
when they face each other in a No. 1-2 semifinal game on Tuesday.
The Nos. 3 and 4 teams play on Tuesday for the right to advance to
meet the loser of the other semifinal on Wednesday.
The Canadian championship game is set for
Thursday. The winner advances to the Little League junior division
World Series in Taylor, Michigan starting Aug. 12.
Mavericks start 1-1
The Medicine Hat Sports Connection
Mavericks have a 1-1 record at the major AAA Canadian baseball
championships in Sidney Mines, N.S.
On Saturday, the Mavericks led White Rock,
B.C. 5-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning before falling
6-5. Brad Paradis started the game on the mound for the Mavericks,
while Kyle Florkowski threw in relief.
On Sunday, the Hatters claimed a 7-2
victory over Timmins, Ont. Paradis hit a three-run home run to
power the Mavericks to victory.
The Mavericks resume action today with a
match against Atlantic champion Glace Bay, N.S.
Thunder in prairie final
The Medicine Hat junior AA Co-op Thunder
have qualified for the final of their prairie championship
tournament in Fort McMurray.
The Thunder advanced to today&rsquos
championship game of the five-team tournament by posting a 3-1
record in round robin play. After starting 1-1, the Thunder rolled
off a pair of convincing wins.
First, the Hatters thrashed Edmonton East
Park 10-0. Walker Dillman earned the pitching win for the
Thunders.
The Thunder then downed Calgary East 11-4.
Brayden Miller earned the pitching win, while Tanner Ross and
Justin Becic both had two hits for the Hatters.
Medicine Hat was waiting the result of a
late game Sunday to discover who their opponent will be in
