The lottery kiosk in the Medicine Hat Mall was hopping Wednesday, as hopeful Hatters lined up for a shot at the second-largest lottery jackpot in Canadian history.

“It’s been really, really busy,” said Diana Arnott, who was working the kiosk yesterday morning. “People remember that last time, it went to Alberta.”

Arnott was referring to the $54.3 million prize won by a group of 17 oil and gas workers from Alberta in 2005. While last night’s Lotto 6/49 jackpot wasn’t that high, as of press time, it looked as though the winning 6/49 ticket would be worth more than $43 million.

Meta Sokolovic plays the lottery every week, and wasn’t about to miss out on a chance at that kind of cash.

“I’d probably buy my dream house, and take a real long vacation,” she said after purchasing her ticket. “And of course, give money to my kids.”

Katlyn Tucker was also picking up a ticket, although she didn’t want to make too many plans for the money.

“There’s so much I would want to do with it,” she said. “You don’t really think about it because you don’t really think you’re going to win.”

“It’s too much money to be thinking about it,” said Ken Biddell as he chose his numbers. “I actually think they should divide it among 43 winners so we could each have $1 million. I could spend $1 million quite easily.”

Arnott just smiled when asked how she would feel if it turned out she had sold the winning ticket.

“You know, I would hope the customer remembers me,” she said.

The winning 6/49 numbers were 10, 18, 22, 26, 34 and 38.
