Medicine Hat's very own Canadian Idol
season 2 winner Kalan Porter was recently honoured by the Society
of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN).
"It's cool – especially coming from
(SOCAN)," said Porter.
Porter's song Hurray received the No.1
Song Award for reaching the top spot on the MuchMusic Countdown
chart in late May.
"When we had originally written the song,
I really didn't like it – at all. I just wanted to totally
scrap it but my manager – to his credit – said 'live
with it a bit and change it around a bit,'" said the former
Hatter.
The night before Porter was scheduled to
record Hurray, he re-wrote the entire thing. "It just sort of came
together and became one of my favourite songs," he said of the 2007
release Wake Up Living.
According to Porter, the Hurray video was
shot on a budget of about $3,000, "which in videoland is quite low
budget," he added. "And I just did it with some kids who were out
of Ryerson and put it online... eventually Perez Hilton posted it
on his site... and then it sort of snowballed from there."
Porter said winning an award is
“really nice because it kind of keeps you going."
Hurray was co-written by with Gregory
Johnston and Stevie Sallis and is published by the Southern Music
Publishing Co. Canada. |
