Calling all youth seeking employment, a
Youth Job Fair is being held next Wednesday to promote face-to-face
interactions with potential local employers.
The Service Canada Centre for Youth has
teamed up with the YMCA YouthWORKS Employment Centre to host the
afternoon event, which will see upwards of eight local employers
and one community organization in attendance.
Teague Lamarche, lead youth service
officer, says all organizations involved have plenty of positions
to fill for fall for many different interests and skill levels.
"They are all looking to do a lot of
hiring for the fall so we thought we'd help them out as well as
promote youth employment here in the community," said Lamarche.
"Youth can come down to one location to get more information from
the employers and also drop off applications or resumes."
Employers who will be on hand during the
fair include, Perkins, Moduline, Wal-Mart, Eagle Well Servicing,
Mission Drilling, City of Medicine Hat, Sunnyside Village and
Northern Reflections.
Connection Career & Safety Services
— who help youth and adults get into different positions in
the oil field – will also be on hand at the fair.
"There are a number of different
organizations that have jobs suitable for youth looking for
after-school, evening and weekend positions," said Lamarche.
"There's also an equal number of
employers looking for full-time employees."
The Youth Job Fair runs from noon to 3
p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 770 First Street S.W.
Youth interested in applying for positions
at the job fair are encouraged to make an appointment with an
advisor by calling 403-529-4733.
The Youth Job Fair will feature a free
barbecue with hot dogs and beverages for both employers and youth
— a perfect opportunity to mingle and meet with potential
employers.
"Doing that networking in person and
making that face-to-face contact is crucial," said Lamarche.
"Faxing off a resume is one thing, but to actually talk to the
employer really helps their chances and helps to make that human
connection for the perspective employer."
There will also be an official address at
12:45 p.m. by Medicine Hat MP Monte Solberg.
The Service Canada Centre for Youth and
YMCA YouthWORKS both provide services that include helping
potential employees with cover letters, resumes and job
searches.
Lamarche says there are the regular job
postings as well at the office for seasonal and temporary youth
positions.
For more information call The Service
Canada Centre for Youth at 403-529-4733 or visit them during their
