I was very surprised to read Zoe
Szuch’s article “What’s in a Name?”
I have a unique name and it’s not
because my parents wanted to ‘live an eccentric
lifestyle’. They believed that I was unique and different and
wanted that to show in my name.
Ms. Szuch is right; people continually do
ask me the meaning behind my name and I do tell the same story over
and over but it is far from an annoyance. If it is someone I am
meeting for the first time, they will most likely remember me
better because of my unique name and the accompanying story. In
today's tight business market, I consider this an advantage.
I too continually spell my name many times
a day and have even had someone ask me, “What kind of cruel
joke were your parents playing with you?” I think it is far
from a joke. Although, I often have to tell people how to pronounce
my name, having the name Shyloh-Dawn didn’t ruin my childhood
or leave me with a dozen nicknames that mocked me.
Names are one way that parents can express
the uniqueness of their children. I think a unique name can be a
wonderful gift. I am very proud of my name and am thankful to my
parents for letting me stand out in this way. I would never trade
my name for something more common like Ashley, Jennifer, or
Julie.
