Many angles to consider when regarding city funds Print E-mail

We have been reading with some interest and some shame the discussion and finger-pointing going on with respect to the $8 million dollars owed to the City by a SemGroup affiliate for natural gas sold but not yet paid for.

As a long-time Medicine Hat residents we look around and marvel at how fortunate our city is when compared to other municipalities across the country. We have low taxes, good services and excellent amenities (just look at our leisure centre which is second to none, or how about the Esplanade). Looking back over Mr. Labas' tenure with the City, we feel like we owe him a debt of gratitude, not scorn. From the City's own 2007 Report to Residents, we noted how the City's wealth has exploded since 1999 — from $750 million to $1.5 billion. Gerry Labas is certainly not the only man responsible for this, but we are sure his long hours and hard work has been a major contributor to it. From our view he has been an excellent steward of the citizens purse. Medicine Hat is not the only organization exposed to this financial trickery by an American corporation: Crescent Point Energy is estimated to have lost $30 million, Celtic Energy another $20 million. Everyone seems to be caught up in this ugliness and it's not fair to look for a scapegoat in Mr. Labas. Judge the man on his entire eight years or so of fine service to this City and if you see him before us— pass on our thanks.
