At least two dead, three missing in weekend water accidents Print E-mail
Monday, 18 August 2008

at 12:50 on August 18, 2008, EDT.

TORONTO, Ont. - An elderly American man is dead after running into trouble swimming in Lake Erie during a vacation in Ontario.

The man experienced difficulty when he was swimming in Port Maitland, Ont., on Sunday afternoon. His son-in-law rushed into the water and managed to pull the man to shore and perform CPR but the man was pronounced dead at a Dunnville hospital.

Provincial police identify the man as 74-year-old Leonard Kurek of Orchard Park, near Buffalo, N.Y.

Meanwhile, police haven't released the identity of a body pulled from the Trent River on Sunday but say it is a Markham man who slipped into the water while fishing.

Police are also searching for a missing boater on the St. Lawrence River near Gananonque, and two people who disappeared in their boat on Lake Superior about 220 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay, Ont.
