Viola player Tegen Davidge of Medicine Hat won the top honours at the National Music Festival which was held in Edmonton from Aug. 14-16.

Davidge, 18, said she was entirely shocked but very happy about winning.

"You just have to get out and play for the right reasons and I just got up there and had so much fun and it paid off."

Edmonton hosted the festival in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the City of Edmonton as well as the 100th anniversary of the National Music Festival.

The following musicians were awarded $1,500 for winning in their categories:

Tegen Davidge representing Alberta – strings

Jessica Strong representing Manitoba – vocals

Jan Lisiecki representing Alberta – piano

Arash Noori representing Ontario – classical guitar

Vincent Lauzier representing Québec – woodwinds

Rob Weymouth representing Ontario – brass

Trio Con Brio representing Ontario – chamber ensemble

Each of the class winners performed for the Hon. Norman Kwong, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta and his wife at the Winspear Theatre on Aug. 16.

The grand prize winner of the National Music Festival was Calgarian pianist Jan Lisiecki.

Chamber ensemble Saschadare Quartet, comprised of Tegen Davidge, Cameron Rempel, Kumiko Sakamoto and Laurence Schaufele, placed third at the competition in the chamber ensemble class.
