The stage is set for the much-anticipated
expansion of the Medicine Hat Lodge Resort Casino & Spa.
City council this week passed a bylaw to
close a portion of Redwood Crescent SE to allow for a consolidation
with adjacent privately-owned property to the north and west.
The area in question has been declared
surplus to the needs of Alberta Transportation and the City of
Medicine Hat and will be used by the Lodge for parking purposes.
The Lodge will provide the necessary fencing and landscaping.
According to a report from the
city’s land and properties department, closure of the west
leg of Redwood Crescent SE will resolve a concern from residential
owners about the east leg of Redwood Crescent continually being
used by late night patrons leaving the Lodge.
First reading of the bylaw took place on
February 19 and the legal advertising was done on February 23 and
March 1. In addition, 43 adjacent property owners received written
formal notifications, but no submissions were received by the
city.
There was one resident, however, who
discussed a concern with the city regarding access in the winter to
the Super Mail Box in the winter, since there’ll be no
sidewalk.
City council also approved a bylaw
amendment to amend the land use bylaw to redesignate a portion of
land at the site from R -2 low density residential district to C-3
general commercial district.
One letter of opposition from a
neighbourhood resident expressed concerns about air pollution and
noise concerns regarding parked vehicles in an expanded parking
lot.
Today, the city’s municipal planning
commission will be reviewing a development permit application from
the Medicine Hat Lodge Hotel for an expansion of the casino.
The proposed expansion would also provide
additional washrooms and administrative space for the
casino’s staff and volunteers, and a renovating of the
existing Lava Lounge. |
