Alberta-raised Joan Donaldson-Yarmey just penned her first crime novel, Illegally Dead, and she'll be in the Hat on Oct. 24 reading and signing her book at the Coles bookstore in the Medicine Hat Mall.

The murder mystery novel takes place along the Crowsnest Highway, where travel writer Elizabeth Oliver stumbles upon a crime scene while conducting research. Oliver quickly becomes consumed with the crime and attempts to solve the mystery.

The long- time British Columbia-based travel writer said, "It was easy for me to have (Oliver) as a travel writer because I kind of know all about that . . .I really want to showcase all that there is because I've already seen how much there is in Canada."

Since she started writing in 1992, Donaldson-Yarmey has authored seven travel books which explore, B.C., Alberta, The Yukon and Alaska.

She said she decided to try her hand at writing a crime novel because she loves reading them so much. "Sometimes you come across a really good one and it's like 'Oh, I'd love to be able to do something like that'. . . so I thought I would give it a try."

Donaldson-Yarmey reads up on true crime stories and picks the brains of some of her police officer friends to get a good idea of realistic murder scenes. She's already started to work on her second murder mystery which will primarily take place in and around Edmonton.

When she's not busy developing story lines or travelling, Donaldson-Yarmey works with disabled people in a Port Alberni, B.C. group home.

Donaldson-Yarmey is launching Illegally Dead in Edmonton on Oct. 21 before she makes her way over to Red Deer, Calgary, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.

Hear Donaldson-Yarmey read from her novel on Oct. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Coles bookstore in the Medicine Hat Mall.
