A Medicine Hat man will be presented an
award by the Lieutenant-Governor for his heroism in rescuing a
woman from the South Saskatchewan River in April.
Beau Hawkings was testing water levels for
Environment Canada below Finlay Bridge on Apr. 28 when he heard a
loud splash. Realizing that a person had fallen into the river from
the bridge above, Hawkings tossed his keys to nearby pedestrians
and asked them to get his lifejacket and throw rope from his truck.
However, the current was carrying the woman away too quickly, so
Hawking leaped into the water himself without his gear.
Wading out into freezing water up to his
neck, Hawking grabbed the woman under her arms and dragged her to
shore, where he was eventually able to turn her over to RCMP and
EMS personnel.
For his bravery, Hawkings will receive the
Rescue Commendation Certificate from the Lifesaving Society. He
will receive his award from Lieutenant-Governor Norman Kwong at a
ceremony at the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton on Monday. |
