Games leave legacy Print E-mail

Thanks to the positive results of hosting the 2008 Alberta Summer Games this past August 7-10, Hat and area residents as well as visitors will benefit from a number of legacy grants for years to come. The was the message brought to city council this week by local Alberta Games Society chair Ron Zablocki and vice-chair Dr. Ken Sauer.
Both pointed out in their final status report to council that being able to host such a successful event would have been impossible without the support of the provincial and municipal governments. It also would have been impossible without the co-operation and support of the business and corporate sector both locally and provincially.
The support and co-operation of the two local MLAs – Rob Renner and Len Mitzel – was also noted and appreciated.
In addition, the support of the Alberta Lottery Board and the Alberta Gaming Commission was also acknowledged for having been instrumental in leaving legacy grants to the community.
Sauer stressed that the excellent financial results were also due to several other key factors such as generous “gifts-in-kind” which allowed the games society to “avoid” or “save” operating costs.
Because of the positive financial results, more than $400,000 was provided for legacy grants such as the two foundations of the two local school districts and Medicine Hat College.
Legacy grants were also made available to local sport associations and other associations for their co-operation in helping run the various sport competitions. In addition, legacy grants were made available to the city to enhance some of its facilities.
Sauer added that countless numbers of positive comments had been received from parents, competitors, officials and visitors reflecting their positive experiences while in the area.
Mayor Norm Boucher and city council thanked the games society for their efforts, their enthusiasm and for the lasting legacies that will benefit Hat and area residents.
