Sebastian Owuya is on his way back to Medicine Hat, but unless a serious injury occurs, he will only practice with the WHL’s Tigers.
Owuya was released from the training camp of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets on Thursday and assigned back to the Tigers. The 6-foot-4 defenceman is entering his overage season.
The Tigers have decided that 19-year-old left-winger Adam Rehak and 18-year-old defenceman Patrik Parkkonen will fill the two import spots they are allowed this season.
“I think we are committed to our two imports in (Adam) Rehak and (Patrik) Parkkonen,” said Tigers general manager Brad McEwen. “We are happy with both.
“We were real happy with the way Sebastian came back. We wanted to make sure he came back with the intent to try and win a spot, and I thought he did everything he could.”
Owuya has cleared WHL waivers. While he can be used by the Tigers, he is eligible to be added to the roster of any WHL club. Tigers staff and Owuya’s agent are trying to find a professional team in the minors he could sign with.
Had the Tigers kept Owuya they would not only have had to move a different import player, but also an overage player off the roster. CHL teams can only keep three overagers past Oct. 13. The Tigers 20-year-olds include Matthew Konan and Cole Grbavac in camp, while Kellan Tochkin remains at Vancouver Canucks camp.
